Retro Look Back: VinodandGrace.com
by Vinod V
It was Tuesday, a little after 11 am in
the morning, in the luxurious tree lined street of Manhasset
Hills which is considered to be one of the most exclusive
neighborhoods of Long Island. It was Christmas and the town,
went to town on the Christmas lights and ornaments on all the
trees.
I was waiting
for my friend in the front of his house, on his porch. He was
in the bathroom and told me he needed a couple of minutes.
The weather was brisk, but was bearable. I had no clue that
my morning was going to be so eventful at that point because
it was a regular morning. I looked into the garden and
noticed a few squirrels clearly heated from the way they were
communicating, were battling for territory, nuts or
something. The neighborhood was most cul-de-sac, which limits
the traffic congestion. So I was surprised to see an Mercedes
with three, elderly, oriental women driving towards the
house. I found something more exciting than the squirrels
while waiting for my friend, I found a rarely sighted vehicle
in this quiet neighborhood. As the car drove past the house,
my friend opened the front door and came out. He was ready,
every hair was accounted for. The car reaches the hill and
turns right.
We both move
towards my car and we hear a crash and boom that was loud.
The squirrels dropped everything and scrambled in 10
directions.
The Mercedes
joined the other Christmas ornaments on the tree as it was
wrapped, head first around the base of the mighty oak tree.
The women were clearly shaken up. The front passenger side
occupant was bleeding from her forehead. They looked at us
and started babbling in some oriental dialect. The driver
look at my friend and in broken English, asked if she could
use the phone. We told her we would call, but she felt she
needed to cover my friend’s phone with blood and speak to the
operator in a language other than English.
The car was
totaled and someone’s husband would be receiving an
interesting phone call at work in a few hours. The women got
out of there cars and waited on the sidewalk for the
ambulance. They all had napkins on their foreheads. They all
were elderly.
I didn’t want
to come to any conclusions, but it was clear as day, cars were
virtually invisible, and a Mercedes has some decent handling.
So what was the problem ? For fear of a vicious back lash and
having parents approaching the golden era, I will not make any
conclusions. But I will leave off with one suggestion which
has been suggested since the advent of driving on a road,
another mandatory road test. If you have driven behind
someone on a single lane strip of road for two hours with the
left signal on, raise em up and let me hear from you. By
contacting me by either way of message board or email, I will
take that as a signature for the new bill to be implemented.
