An Interview with Jarvis "Big Game" Thomas
Welcome back to The Tonight Show I'm your host Chung Lao.

Jarvis "Big Game" Thomas.  You know him from the Message Boards as Big Game and you also know him as a captain of DCZ Finest, the defending BSC Champions.

What you may not know, is that he was once ranked the #1 player in the world in Madden (for the 2 people out there who don't know what that is, it's a highly popular video game based off of the NFL).

Opinionated with no apologies for it.  Read on....

Posted on February 15, 2010

Chung Lao:  Big Game, what’s going on man?

Jarvis:  Ain't too much man, thanks for having me. I'm a big fan of the site.

Chung Lao:  Where did you grow up?

Jarvis:  I grew up in M.D. I lived down in Bladensburg till I was 7 then I've been living in Upper Marlboro MD ever since.

Chung Lao:  Pick one word that describes you.

Jarvis:  Competitor. I always want be the best at what I do..... if I see you doing something then I'm gonna wanna do it better than you.

Chung Lao:  What do you think of IndaPhatFarm.com?

Jarvis:  I think it's great... I was put on to the website about 2 years ago and ever since then I've been a crack head coming on here everyday checking on it seeing what's new.

Chung Lao:  What are your thoughts on our new President after one year in office?

Jarvis:  I think Obama's doing the best with what was left to him. He's trying his best but we're not gonna see any results until 3 years into his term because the world was in complete chaos when he got it. But he can talk a good game though. If he does half the stuff that he said he was gonna do, then I'm satisfied.

Chung Lao:  People may not be aware, but you are a very skilled Madden (video game) player.  Just how skilled?  Well Jason actually won the Madden Challenge back in 2006.

How long did you have to prepare for that event?

Jarvis:  Well it was a long time coming. I was ranked 4th in the world in 2005, 12th in the world in 2006 and #1 in the world in 2007 when I won the world tournament, and 8th in the world in 2008 before retiring. From the day the game came out I was on it hard. It wasn't even like preparing for me because I loved the game so much so I would be on it all the time.  When I come home I would play it till like 6 in the morning. Play rushing attack before I left the house in the morning. Think about plays when I was eating, I mean I was in love lol.

But in all seriousness I was a serious competitor. I hated to lose so anytime I would throw a incompletion during a game I would replay that play until I knew what went wrong or when I should of threw it and it would be a 20 push up fine (probably why I'm so big now). When I played online I would record my games and watch it later, so I was basically watching film on myself to see what I did wrong and what worked good for me and stuff like that.

Chung Lao:  How did it feel to win?

Jarvis:  When I won I was ecstatic. I was in the zone the whole tournament. coming into the tournament I was even the front runner they actually had me ranked 7th going into the tournament. And in all my games except 1 I had to play a top 10 player. How the format was, it was 32 competitors. they would have State tournaments in like M.D,New York, Philly, Texas, Minnesota, etc.... and they flew all the winners from the 32 states to Hawaii to compete in the finals. so in the round of 32 I had a fairly easy game. but in the round of 16 I had to play the 10th ranked player, in the 8 I had to play the 4th ranked player, in the final four I had to play the #1 ranked player and that boy was tough as hell, and in the finals I played the 3rd ranked player.

The funny thing is, I won all my games by 3 except in the finals I won by 32 lol. I won by 3 because I was playing smart and doing a lot of clock control basically, and I only had to kick 1 game winning field goal. So I was in control for the most part of the tournament. Now that I think about it I never trailed in any game lol.

Chung Lao:  What are your future Madden plans?

Jarvis:  Well before I retired I did a show for H.B.O, a show for Pay Per View, commercials on ESPN, and a show on M.T.V. I was on the reality show Madden Nation, I was the host of the Madden 07 release party at Time Square, and I did a special appearance at the NBA all star game 07.

But now that I'm retired I just do guess appearances at tournaments every now and then. I can't believe I still have fans.

For the most part I just play for recreation. But don't get it twisted I will still tune that butt up if you jump out there lol. But now I just focus on coaching. I coach a football team in M.D.  Whenever we win the state super bowl I'm gonna move up and start coaching high school.

Chung Lao:  What job could you absolutely not do?

Jarvis:  The cop that stands in court besides the judge booth all day.... man I would fall asleep after the first hour.

Chung Lao:  What’s the first thing you notice about a person?

Jarvis:  Personality. I'm a fun and outgoing dude so if you got a good personality we're gonna click good, but if your a prick then you'll get treated like one.

Chung Lao:  Autobot or Decepticon?

Jarvis:  Autobot all day baby. (and I'm a big fan of comic movies like Spiderman, X-men, Ironman, Hulk....etc)

Chung Lao:  What is the most important thing in life?

Jarvis:  Family. trust me, friends come and go but your family will always have your back and be there for you. No matter how big the argument or the fight, they will always be there for you.

Chung Lao:  List your Favorites

                A.  Car(s):

My first car that I ever bought, a 1997 Ford Taurus when I was in high school.

My second car that I bought myself when I won the tournament, an '04 Jaguar.

And the car I plan on getting this year, an '07 Dodge Charger.

                B.  Food(s):

Anything my mama cooks lol. but I love lasagna too.

                C.  Hobbies:

                Sports, Sports and more Sports.

                D.  Countries to visit/re-visit:

I traveled almost the whole world in my madden career, but if I had to revisit a place I would have to say Hawaii. The combination of the weather, atmosphere and beautiful people. It ought to be illegal to have a place so beautiful in the world. Everyone down there is just so nice and it's never hotter than 85 and never colder than 60.

                E.  Restaurant(s):

Fridays. Anytime to meet up or just going out with family I go to Friday's. And it's funny cause I've been ordering the same thing for 9 years now. Friday's shrimp with cheese on the fries and extra Jack Daniel sauce.... aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh love it.

Chung Lao:  Name someone you admire and why.

Jarvis:  I admire anyone who would do for others in a situation that no one would help. like the people that actually went down to Haiti to help, the people that went down to New Orleans. Someone in school falls and drops all there books and everyone stares, points and laughs but you go and help pick up there books. that kind of person.

Chung Lao:  Tell us about those skills in the kitchen.

Jarvis:  Oh I can get down son, just give me a pack of instant oatmeal and some hot water and it's on and poppin lol. Naw I can do a lil something something like cooking for 2 but not like a thanksgiving dinner lol.

Chung Lao:  Alright, now lets talk some Blessan Samuel Classic!  How did it feel to finally win a championship?

Jarvis:  Man it felt great. I can't even explain the feeling. I wasn't just happy for my team mates, I was more so happy for the fans that came out every year and stood by us while those chumps from Chicago and Philly stole our hardware.

Chung Lao:  Chicago and Philly have 3 trophies.  How long will the fire burn within you to help lead DC to championships?

Jarvis:  The fire is never gonna stop burning. I've already told my guys what our goals are for the next 3 years. To win 3 straight titles, so we can have the record for 4 championships and the record for consecutive championships with 4 straight.

Chung Lao:  Many have said that had Chicago been at last year’s tournament, DC would not have won a title.  What are your thoughts?

Jarvis:  First of all by ya'll saying that we only won because Chicago wasn't there, ya'll are basically saying that none of ya'll can beat Chicago. And in my opinion I think Texas was a better team than Chicago with Big Dave. They had way better athletes and better shooters by far. But there's always gonna be something to say about us. They said we won because Chicago wasn't there this year. When we win next year its gonna be well ya'll only have 2, you will need 3 to be in the same conversation as Chi town and Philly.

Then when we win the next year it's gonna be well ya'll can't say ya'll are the best team because ya'll have the same number of championships and Chicago and Philly. That's why I told my team... "fellas it's simple, win 4 straight and shut everyone up". but I love the team that I have and I wouldn't trade anybody on my team for anyone in the tournament...(not even DS) lol

Chung Lao:  There is a rivalry that exists between DC and Gburg.  Tell us about this rivalry.

Jarvis:  It's a great rivalry because we are in the same State and we practice together. It's like the Mets and Yankees, but what's funny is, we always beat them 16-4 or 16-5 in practice, but when we play them in the BSC, we can never beat blow them out. We won by 3 last year and lost the year before that. But with all the trash talk and physical play that we do in practices, it always makes for a good game.

Chung Lao:  Alright, the year is 2045, you’ve gone a bit gray up top.  In that year, figure skating was added to the lineup.  How competitive will you remain in that sport, in the year 2045?

Jarvis:  You'll see me out there wit my Speedo's on doing a sit spin for my D.C nation. lmao

Chung Lao:  Lastly, leave us with a parting thought.

Jarvis:  Well I gotta say it's been fun. Always take care of family put God first and live your life with no regrets. See ya'll at the BSC. (and Chicago please make sure your there so I don't have to hear these excuse for another year.)

Chung Lao:  Appreciate it man.  Next up on The Tonight Show is Daniel Palliparambil, one of the founders of Laugh Out Load International. Keep it locked!
