Alpha Team

Based on the tattered letter written by Carlos Mendoza and the map of the island, Alpha team has discovered its mission, reach the Ingen Inlet. The Ingen Inlet was approximately 20 miles away from the Alpha Crash site and this would take all night in the dark. There Alpha could secure a boat or even a recover the weapon that was left by Carlos Mendoza’s uncle.

Biggot laid back and his face grimaced as he gripped his arm, which was snugly fit into a make shift sling. He pointed to an area which had some dry wood. Frank, Vinod, and Jason started an assembly line and piled the wood, higher to the top and more around the base. As the men held the wood together, Grace and Becky each rubbed two sticks together. After nearly an hour, a spark was generated, finally some warmth. Biggot was satisfied with fire and layed nearby on a bed of leaves, his eyes were closed but he wasn’t sleeping. The blaze was their only luxury right now and they cherished it. Everyone was quiet, but the silence was drowned by the waves against the shore and the crickets singing their songs. The moon’s reflection of the waters was not only beautiful, but it provided a back up light source.

Becky and Grace look around at the group and notices the silence. Grace asks, “So what do we do now ?” That was the million dollar question. What do we do now. Vinod looks at each face and notices the amber glow of their faces, everyone looks the same shade. “People, we have to make it to tomorrow morning.” Everyone looks around. Franklin jumps up and says, “So now is everyone going to blurt out an obvious comment ?” “Ok, let me adjust my comment a little. We have to get through the night, so that we can get to the Ingen Inlet. The letter and the sign that the boys found confirm its existence.”

Everyone seemed to agree in unison. Franklin and Jason got up to relieve themselves, they walk over to a nearby bush. The remaining four sit there looking at the flame. There was a rustling in the bush, coming from the same direction that the boys went into. Alpha looks over and sees Franklin and Jason running like Michael Johnson. This was trouble. Vinod looked at Biggot and told Grace to grab Becky’s hand and run. Vinod hurled Biggot up. Franklin and Jason ran past us and then came back to assist with Biggot. Becky utilizing her volley ball drills to drag Grace deep into the woods. Everyone was screaming, apparently we were being chased by something. We ran into the woods, it was pitch dark. The creature was looking voraciously for us as it grunted and screetched a high pitched scream. It was blind as well, but we all saw its silouhoutte as it was pacing back and forth, there was moisture spraying from his nostrils. With in a matter of a minute, its takes off.

Everyone was crouched over with their hands on their knees. Time to find more wood and start a flame again. Biggot sat down, wood was gathered and a flame was lit. “Where the hell are we ?” Grace asks. We were on some deserted island. “Ok people, we have about 4 hours before the morning”

“And if we are not in transition by sun’s up, we will be attacked by whatever chased us last night”, Biggot announces.

Biggot was right, we had to be moving by morning.

Chapter 1: The Reckoning

“On behalf of Virgin Atlantic, I would like to welcome you aboard Flight 154, bound from Washington Dulles International Airport, to San Perano. I am Captain Joe Johnston. This flight is a little unusual in that we’ll be having Flight 274, also bound for San Terano, flying about a 20 miles behind us. The temperature in balmy San Perano is 72 degrees, and the humidity is 15 percent. There will be little cloud cover this evening, so expect an excellent view of the Atlantic as we approach the island. Flight attendants, secure cabin for departure.”

The flight was off to a bad start. Virgin had provided them with a small twin engine prop for this flight and that wasn’t sitting well with anyone aboard. But since this was a last minute thing, they would have to deal with it. Most of the people on board looked Indian, but there were some military personnel on board as well.

Vinod was sleeping soundly on Flight 154. Sam John was listening to to his walkman on Flight 274. Everyone on both planes were looking forward to some relaxing time. Some people had just graduated college. Others were meeting family on San Perano.

Most people on both flights got 20 minutes of rest. 20 minutes. That would be the last time any of them got a good night’s rest.

May Day, May Day, this is flight 154 bound for San Perano, declaring an EMERGENCY. We’re caught in the thick of a tropical storm. It came right on top of us, with no warning. Instruments are down. Engine 1 is down, repeat we have lost Engine 1. I cannot locate or contact 274 in this mess. Rudders are not responding. Co-Pilot recommends we set down on the nearest available piece of land. I am heading for coordin…….

Soy screamed as Flight 274 spun out of control and raced toward the ocean below. She could just make out the silhouette of an island. The pilot must be trying to make for the coast. “Father, please forgive me. Grant me strength” she managed through the sheer terror of the moment. This was it. Its all over.

Jason looked out the window, eyes wider than ever before, realizing that he would die. One wing had ripped off and the plane was out of control. Death was imminent. This wasn’t supposed to happen. I’m too young to die, he thought. Impact.

Flight 154 veered to the left as it tried to right itself before impact. Impact occurred about 500 feet from shore. The right wing ripped off as the plane surged into the water.

Flight 274 impacted the East Side of the island about 10 minutes after Flight 154 went down. The pilot managed to get the landing gear down, as the plane hit the wet beach.

Explosion

Silence

When Vinod slowly opened his eyes, he knew two things. He had a killer headache, and he was not in the plane anymore. Slowly getting up and coughing up water and blood, panic set in. The plane had somehow crashed and he was on a beach. Grace! Where was Grace! Frantically running up and down the shoreline, stumbling and falling to the ground in the process.

Binu clawed at his seatbelt to get loose as the intense heat from the downed Flight 274 increased. Wrenching himself from the wreckage, Binu managed to get five others out of the plane before it exploded, sending him hurling into the sand.

Running down the beach, Vinod saw a group of four people hovering over someone. Running at almost full speed, yelling “Grace!” “Grace!” as he approached the raggedy looking group, he looked to see who was lying on the sand. His heart sank. It was Grace. Grabbing her hand “Grace!” “Hon! Can you hear me!” “Talk to me!”

It was a miracle that anyone had survived at all. The plane wreckage had shattered after the explosion to the point where little was recognizable. Which meant the chance of an immediate rescue in this island filled region, was slim.

Grace’s eyelids fluttered as she woke up. “Hi”, was all she could manage. She was going to be ok. After quick introductions, Vinod realized everyone was pretty banged up.

Chris B had broken his arm, and he was making a makeshift sling. Everyone else had multiple cuts and bruises but seemed like they would make it.

Crystal woke to the sound of people talking. Everything was blurry. Where was she? On the beach. What had happened? The last thing she could remember was the plane impacting. Then everything had gone blank. She was somehow alive. That was the important thing. The five remaining passengers were awake and moving around, collecting everything they could use from the wreckage. Helping Sona to her feet, she joined them.

Holding Grace close to him, Vinod and the rest of the Flight 154 survivors made their way into the immediate jungle, for some tree cover. Night was approaching fast. “Hey, what’s that!?” Franklin shouted. About a mile off into the distance, there was some kind of building, a small structure.

Vinod stayed with the women as Chris B, Frank, and Jason set out to explore the building before sunset. The building had been abandoned for quite some time. Chris B silently scooped up an old worn out sign as the men headed back to the others. “Find anything?” Vinod asked, fatigue setting in. “Not a thing” replied Frank soberly.

Well, there wasn’t much to be done at this point. Get some rest, and deal with this in the morning. Sam was still out cold over at the Flight 274 crash site. Binu gathered everyone underneath a large tree near the beach as a downpour began. Strange howls and noises were emanating from the interior of the island. No one knew where they were. The situation wasn’t looking good.

As the group lay down in the grass, Vinod noticed a flash of light coming from where Chris B was sleeping. Walking over to him, he could just make out the letters on a piece of metal he was using as a pillow. It read INGEN……

“Huh? Where am I? Daddy? Gifty? Faith? Anybody?,” Sam was in a panic, as he slowly began to ease out of his coma. The only thing he knew for sure was his throbbing headache. Binu ran over quickly and slapped the bejesus out of him to snap him out of it. Unfortunately, the slap must have been too hard and Sam slipped back into a coma. One by one, members of flight 274 began to wake-up. Weary-eyed from a cold and wet night, their aches and sores allowed them to sleep no more. The pouring rain from the previous night had faded into a light drizzle.

Jessy started walking around to relieve the agonizing pain in her leg. She stumbled onto two huddled masses. It was Soy and Sona blissfully sleeping away. “Get up! Get up!” screamed Jessy. “ How could you sleep at a time like this!” Grudgingly, they got up. Crystal was already up and about collecting wood to feed the little fire they had going. Team Bravo, as we shall call them collectively from now on, gathered around the fire to warm up. Well all of them except the person lying on the ground and Sam who was still in a coma . “ What person lying on the ground? asked Soy. “That person,” as Jessy pointed to a person lying on the ground.

“Who is that?” shrieked Sona. “ I thought there were only six of us!” “No, No.” said Binu, “ Let me take you back to Chris’s narration.” “According to Chris, this is what happened.”

“Crystal woke up to the sound of people talking. Everything was blurry. Where was she? On the beach. What had happened? The last thing she could remember was the plane impacting. Then everything had gone blank. She was somehow alive. That was the important thing. The five remaining passengers were awake and moving around, collecting everything they could use from the wreckage. Helping Sona to her feet, she joined them.”

Binu continued, “Upon careful examination of the narrative, you can see that there were 5 people moving around when Crystal woke up. “…Crystal then proceeds to help Sona to her feet.” Ah hah! This leads us to believe that there was a seventh person , because 5 people were moving around and Crystal then helped Sona to her feet.” “Excellent detective work,” exclaimed Jessy. “That explains that person lying on the ground. He must be the seventh person!” “Not so fast,” said Binu, “According to Chris, there were 5 people moving around, but Sam was still in a coma; So how can he be moving around?” At this point, Team Bravo was just plain confused. “Are you saying there is an 8th person”, asked Soy .

“Sam? Is that you?” said Crystal. Everyone turned their heads to see a raggedy Sam John shuffle to his feet and stagger toward them. “How did you come out of your coma?” asked Soy. “Through the lowe of God” Sam replied.

It was now 9 am. The scorching sun dissipated all evidence of the previous night’s rainfall. Team Bravo was still trying to solve the mystery of the 8th person and Sam was trying to fix a bad wedgie. All of a sudden, they heard a terrible terrible sound. It was a shriekish howl that resonated in a frequency so high, it bought a chilling quiver down their spine. “What in God’s name was that?” cried Sona. “I don’t know,” said Binu, “But whatever it was, it didn’t sound good.”

Sam had enough of this. He called them all together for a group meeting. They huddled around a makeshift tent set up a hundred feet from the shore. “Now if we’re going to survive on this island , we are going to have to work together,” said Sam. Sam divided up different tasks for Team Bravo. “Binu and Sona, you guys go search for some food. Soy and Crystal, you guys go collect debris leftover from the plane wreckage. Jessy, I’m sending you on a reconnaissance mission to the interior of the island.” “And what are you going to do” remarked Jessy . “I proclaim myself High Priest of this Island, I will chill here at base with mystery person 7,” said Sam bluntly.

After a brief ceremony that ordained Sam as the High Priest, members of Team Bravo were ready to search the island for sustenance. “Wait! We need weapons!” said Soy. “Indeed,” said Binu. Team Bravo spent the rest of the morning making weapons. Binu made himself a lovely looking bow and arrow from some dry timber. Soy made an ax and used it to cut down some trees from which she carved long sticks and attached carved stones as spear heads. She then gave the ax to Crystal. Sona , while wandering along the coastline, found a gun with 8 bullets. It was her lucky day. Jessy gathered a few stones and made a slingshot. Sam picked up a big rod and now declared himself Moses. He relinquished the title of High Priest.

After another brief ceremony that ordained Sam as Moses, members of team Bravo were really ready to scout the island. With weapons in hand and Moses leading them, they were confident of survival. Of course, after two ordination ceremonies and a morning wasted on making useless weapons, they still had nothing to eat. It was now 3 pm. Team Bravo finally went out to accomplish their specific duties. As dusk rolled in, team Bravo slowly assembled once again at base. Each member was heartily greeted by Moses and applauded for their findings. Soy and Crystal salvaged useful debris such as plane propellers, two barrels of jet fuel, flashlights left on the plane and couple of other things. Sona and Binu came back with baskets of berries, nuts, apples, coconuts and other fruits. Soy, being a trained outdoorswoman, speared a wild boar and began roasting it over a fire. Her expert training in the jungles of Mexico proved to be valuable asset for just a time like this. Sona found it appropriate to insert an apple in the roasting boar’s mouth. After Moses had blessed the boar, team Bravo fellowshipped in juicy pork.

Everyone was content with the wonderful meal. There was only one problem Make that two. Besides a scrappy tent that was held together by a few sticks tethered together with some twine, team Bravo had no real shelter. It looked like another miserable night awaited them. Also, Jessy had never returned from her reconnaissance mission.....
