Cubs eager to kick “Billy the Goat” out the door

October is here and on Chicago’s North side the roars are starting to stir up. The die hards’ of the Chicago Cubs can finally keep their eyes glued to the television for some postseason baseball. That is right; the “curse” of the Chicago Cubs seems to be lifted, slightly, as they have clinched the NL Central crown.

The Cubs finally clinched the division with a two game margin over the strong side of the Milwaukee Brewers.  All season long the two have been battling for the chance to hold the title.  It came down to the wire and finally the “gods” of baseball looked kindly upon the Cubbies. They figured that 62 years of even being in the World Series was enough and 99 years of actually winning it all was tortured enough.

It has been four long years since the Cubs and their fans have experienced the pleasures of even the postseason.

In 2003, everyone believed that the infamous “Curse of the Billy Goat” was finally going to disappear until the devastating fan interruption down the left field line seemed to just smack it right in the face of all Cub fans.  The curse was never going too vanished as it seemed to most fans.  However, with the postseason opened up to the Cubs for service some hopes are being rejuvenated.

After a long offseason and an excessive amount of money spent by the Cubbies to bring in names like Alfonso Soriano and newly acquired head coach Lou Piniella, some expected the Cubs to waltz right into World Series.

On the contrary, the Cubs started off looking like they belonged in the minor league.  They played like a first year team with little strive and intensity.  The losses were piling up more than the victories, and to top it all off the players were having backyard brawls in the dugout.  Lou Piniella not only got himself on a team that has not seen the World Series since WWII, but was now running a day care.

It looked like the season was just going to be another one of those, “We’ll get them next year” for Cub fans everywhere.

As the season progressed, however, the team began to pull it together.  Behind the pitching of Carlos Zambrano and Jason Marquis, and the fielding and hitting of players like Derek Lee, Alfonso Soriano, and Ryan Theriot.

The Cubbies started to string together win after win. The season was turning inside out and hopes for the playoff were not only hopes but actually seemed within arms reach.

Well the hopes are no more, and with the continued fighting of the Cubs throughout the season; the postseason has been sealed and delivered to them.

However, now is not the time to go running around banging pots and pans in the streets for victory.  The Cubs faithful have seen there team in the playoffs before, and know that they the Cubs are 0-for-their-past-11 postseasons, which include seven unsuccessful World Series appearances between 1910 and 1945. Their overall record in postseason games since 1908: 15-42.

Those numbers are far from impressive, and to most depressing.

On the other hand, this year it seems a lot different to most fans.  The fans are pulling more than ever for the Cubbies to do something great.  With their leadership in the clubhouse, and their youngsters striving for victory it seems that the Cubs could kick that “Billy the Goat” to the curb.

The gods have brought them this far, what is to say that they can not continue to sprinkle a little more good luck on the Chicago Cubs?

The Cubs will start their postseason drive off on Wednesday, October 3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Can Christian Artists Succeed in the Music Industry?

The secular music industry today is booming with artists that have provided a rollercoaster ride through the world of drugs, sex, and violence.  So what place do artist that claim to stand by faith have in a world like that?

Over the past few years, artist, who started their careers in the Christian music industry, have tried their hand in the secular mainstream music world.  Artist such as the well known Switchfoot, Matt Kearney, and Relient K are just a few bands that have decided to make the switch.  These artists all began their careers in the Christian arena, but have recently found themselves flowing in the secular mainstream world.

To most Christians out there today, it has become a challenge to cipher whether or not artist such Kearney and Switchfoot have decided to put their faith in the backdrop or take an opportunity to share the faith with individuals who might never hear it from anyone else. As Christians are we not suppose to spread the faith of Christ to all non-believers?  It is our calling in life to go out into the world and share the good news of what we know to be true.  These artists are trying to do just that.

Switchfoot’s latest disc titled, “Oh Gravity” has sold double the amount of copies than any of there other discs released in the Christian music world.  Granted, more money is obviously an opportunity for bands to make it in the secular world, but for Switchfoot and Relient K money is not really the concern.  Recently in an interview from Planet magazine, Switchfoot’s lead singer John Foreman still emphasizes the fact that money is never there concern. Foreman stated that, “We have always described success as not having a lot of green pieces of paper in our wallets, socks that match or a car that is all one color. For me, it’s doing what you believe in, what you love and are passionate about.”

Switchfoot, Relient K, and others like Matt Kearney and Underoath have always stood on their beliefs over the years and continue to produce uplifting, positive lyrics that anyone of their listeners can understand. They, as well as so many other bands that have switched into the mainstream world, might not exactly claim to be believers, but through their actions and music might offer just a glimpse into the world of faith.

So the question really comes into mind, if these bands are so successful and have such a strong basis of listeners then why do they not proclaim their faith louder and stronger?  Are they afraid of being turned away by listeners, or loosing the fame that the secular world has brought them?  There have been artists in the secular world that have come to known Christ and felt such a strong conviction to leave that world and allow God to use their talents. These artists include former Backstreet Boy, Brian Litrell, and the former guitar player from the heavy metal band Korn.  Both of these artists put their talents into Gods hands and had to leave the industry that allowed them to get so famous.

Both of these individuals have made it in the Christian music world, but still no where as much as being in the secular world, and they both claim to be just fine with that.  However, for the bands like Switchfoot and Relient K money definitely does not seem to be the issue.  For these guys, they have been called into the world of sin to bring light through there uplifting lyrics and positive presence inside a music industry that has been absolutely corrupted.

In my opinion, these individuals have to definitely keep their eyes fixed on the truth and keep their hearts towards Christ.  They are out there reaching people that might never hear the truth.  Their music is uplifting, positive and encouraging.  As long as these artists know that and live out there faith to those people they can be successful in the secular world.  To them success is not about the fame or the fortune, it is all about the music and how people hear the words that are being presented to them.

Romans 10:14 –15, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?”  Remember this verse, and remember that not only artist have the ability to go out into the world and preach the good news of Christ.

Beckham sets out to bring soccer to life in America

The hype, the excitement, and the anticipation have all come to an end.  The infamous, as Europeans would say, footballer David Beckham has traveled across the pond and landed dead center in the city of LA. He has become England’s most famous star in years, and the two hundred and fifty million dollar midfielder for the L.A. Galaxy says that he did not come for the money.  His desire, to change the way Americans view the game of soccer and bring it to life for years to come.

Beckham is leaving behind his home in Spain where he formerly played for the club called Real Madrid.  Real Madrid a few years ago was classified as a giant compared to other football clubs in Spain because of the amount of superstars they had collected over that time.  However, with all of the talent that one team could fill, Real Madrid had its struggles and the club was in a slump.  Beckham never imagined that this is what he would be leaving his beloved, childhood dream team, Manchester United from England for.  He loved Real Madrid, but the desire to win carried heavier than anything else.  The announcement of his decision to leave Real and head to America left Beckham hated by Real’s managers and another challenge in his way.

Beckham has faced more challenges and heartache throughout his career as a footballer.  Signed at the age of fourteen to Manchester United, he brought life to the club and most of all victory.  His time came to play for his country in the World Cup. Beckham was a youngster and speaking from experience needed to take some time to mature in the game.  He was red carded in one of the matches, which ended up costing England the game and an early exit out of the World Cup.  Beckham was threatened, hated by his countrymen, but knew that was not the end of David Beckham.  He came back and fought harder than ever before.  Four years later Beckham scored in the World Cup which allowed England to continue.  Beckham was a hero and the captain of the England team for over five years.  However, the past World Cup, England lost in a heartbreaker in the later stages of the tournament, and the next day Beckham announced that he would pass the arm band on to another.  Beckham was thankful for his time as captain, but did not expect that with that decision would bring a call from the England manager saying that the team was going in another direction and Beckham was not included.  Another mountain for David Beckham, but that would not stop him.

He continued to play for Real even after the true character was showed from the team. However, Beckham wanted to win before he left and bring a championship to the fans and that club. He did just that.  Real Madrid recently won the Spanish league this past season with David Beckham and family waving goodbye to their fans at the finale.  It almost seemed fitting the way that the exit doors were opened for Beckham.  He also was asked to come back to the England squad after the enormous amount of “There is only one Beckham” coming from the stands of England.  He accepted and is back playing with his beloved country.  He overcame the diversity and never let the negative get into his head.  He loves the game he plays and that was what carry’s him through it.  The new challenge for Beckham now, America.

A lot of people say that it was for the money, or friends of mine have said that he is loosing his touch overseas and came to an easier game over here.  I look at that and start to smile.  Beckham has had offers to stay at Real Madrid up to date, and offers to continue his play in England. However, Beckham loves the idea that the game of soccer can begin to erupt here in America.  He is still an amazing footballer with one of the best right foot's in the game.  He wants the game of football to grow in this nation.  Beckham loves the face of new challenge it seems and this one is going to be a tough one.  He made his debut on Saturday, July 22 with the most airtime I have seen for soccer match in a long time in America.  Beckham’s dream almost seems to be coming true already.

David Beckham has gone through things that most athletes never face.  He has faced the diversity and has set out to make a new chapter in his life. Enough of the what the critics have to say. I personally think that Beckham has made a brilliant decision.  I appreciate the fact that his love for the game has driven him to bring it to the states.  Beckham has not lost his touch or become a loosing star overseas.  He is still one of the greatest to play the game of soccer.  I am excited for this, and David Beckham should be looked at as a man of courage. He has taken a step in his life that most people would never do. He has moved his entire family across seas in hope of making a nation, which is dominated by baseball and football, become ecstatic about the true football game. I hope that soccer erupts in this country because of what he is going to do.  It is exciting to see David Beckham here, and hopefully one day the game of soccer will not just be erupting over that name, but the game itself.  That truly is why I think David Beckham is here in America today.

The Name's JP

Yo!  What is going on, and how are you feeling?  Well my name is Jon-Phillip Troglio, but I prefer to go by the name J.P.  I have had that name ever since I have been a youngster because my older brother could not pronounce my name so my parents shortened it.  So, that is my name and I hope to get to know a lot of you by name and become really in touch with all of you throughout my writings.

Well I am extremely excited to be writing for InDaPhatFarm.com, and having the chance to get my writings and thoughts out there.  I am from the south-side of Chicago, and no I am not a Sox’s fan.  I am actually a die-hard Cubs fan, who every day has to defend the infamous loosing ball team to all of his south-side Sox’s buddies.  I have lived here since I have come out of the shoot. I am one of three siblings with an older bro, and younger, baby sis.  My father is a minister/ motivational speaker, and my mother has been the greatest stay at home mother anyone could ask for.  I am a twenty year old who desires to put the Lord first, family second and everything after that is all living life to the fullest and enjoying every second of it.

I am currently attending Olivet Nazarene University in the great southern city of Bourbonnais, IL.  I am a Journalist major with minors in Marketing and Political Science.   So pretty much my life is filled with anything from how the stock market is operating to who really is the best candidate for the upcoming election. I am also on the men’s varsity soccer team.  I have had the opportunity to continue my sports career there, and I love every second of it.  Olivet has been a blessing beyond all belief for me.  It has developed me into who I want to become in the future as a career and a man. ONU has pushed me to continue living a life of faith with the big man upstairs.  I have been challenged, pushed, and stretched beyond any of my imagination.  I do not think it is a Christian university job to do that, but really because I have been trying to follow what God has called me to do. It has been a blessing and a great period in my life.

I recently switched to a journalist major last spring semester.  I was not to sure of what I really wanted to do in life and thought business was the best shot for me.  I was really not happy with my classes and just felt like I was another kid in a desk. I continued to pray and really felt to do this whole writing thing.  I have enjoyed it to the fullest, and really hope to bring you all what you want to read and what you want to experience.   I love all sports, and have come from a family of athletes who live off of sports. I live and breathe off of music, and have been playing the drums and piano for a very long time.  So you can see that I am going to bring you guys anything from the sports world to the constant struggle going on overseas in places like Uganda.

I love to talk about anything and everything. I love to listen to what people have to say, and would appreciate your comments. I enjoy meeting new people and listening to the experiences in their lives, and learn from what individuals have gone through.

God has done some amazing things in my life.  He has brought me out of things that I never thought I was capable of getting into.  I am glad that I found Him as my Savior, and never a day in my life will I ever turn away from Him again.

I hope that you all enjoy what I have to say.  I will only be coming at you once a month so get it while it is hot.  I know that I will really have a lot of fun with this opportunity.  You are the reader and I want you to enjoy it.  So this is the first of many to come, and I will be getting at you all soon! Take care and continue to be blessed.  In Him all things are accomplished.

Phil. 4:13

I’m out yo!

JP Troglio
