For
those that haven't played volleyball since the last century, the
new rules are as follows:
1)
Only one attempt at service.
2)
The ball can touch the net on service.
3)
A set is played with rally scoring, with a win by two point scoring
system.
4)
The server can serve from anywhere along the back line.
5)
It is legal to contact the ball with any part of a players body
Part 3: Basic Volleyball Regulations
1.
6 players on a team, 3 on the front row and 3 on the back row.
2.
Maximum of three hits per side.
3.
A player may not go into an adjacent court to play the ball if a
match is being played on that court.
4. If the ball hits a basketball backboard
within the playing area of the court, the point may be replayed
at the referees’ discretion.
5. Replay: The official should direct a play
over if a loose ball is on the court from another game that may
cause danger or interferes with the play.
6.
Player Positions: After the ball is served, players may move
from their respective positions.
7.
A back line player may come to the net for a save. If they come
to the net for a spike, the feet must leave the ground from
behind the 10' (attack) `line.
8.
Rotation substitution can be used throughout the game when a
play has been stopped by the referee.
9.
Player may not hit the ball twice in succession (A block is not
considered a hit).
10.
Ball may be played off the net.
11.
A ball hitting a boundary line is "in"
12. A ball is "out" if it hits…
·
Wall
·
ceiling
·
an antennae
·
the floor completely outside the court
·
any of the net or cables outside the antennae
·
the referee stand or pole
13.
It is illegal to catch, hold, or throw the ball.
14.
If
two or more players contact the ball at the same time, it is
considered one play and either player involved may make the next
contact (provided the next contact isn't the teams 4th hit).
Part 4: Basic Volleyball Rule Violations
The
result of a violation is a point for the opponent. The referees
have full discretion in this matter.
1. The ball must be clearly hit. Illegal hits
include:
·
Carrying: Any ball hit underhand with an open palm or any spiker
contacting the ball behind the head and continuing on for a
spike.
·
Double hits (two hand touches)
·
Push: Any player pushing the ball at chest level
2.
When serving, stepping on or across the service line as you
make contact with the serve.
3.
If a ball hits the net on the serve and goes over, ball is in
play.
4.
The ball cannot be spiked or blocked off of a serve.
5.
Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully
6.
Touching the net with any part of the body while the ball is in
play. Exception: If the ball is driven into the net with such
force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player, no
foul will be called, and the ball shall continue to be in play.
7.
When blocking a ball coming from the opponent’s court,
contacting the ball when reaching over the net is a violation if
both:
·
your opponent hasn't used 3 contacts AND
·
they have a player there to make a play on the ball
·
When attacking a ball coming from the opponents court, contacting
the ball when reaching over the net is a violation if the ball
hasn't yet broken the vertical plane of the net.
8.
Crossing the court centerline with any part of your body.
Exception: if it's the hand or foot, the entire hand or entire
foot must cross for it to be a violation.
9.
Serving out of order. (rotation)
10.
Back row player blocking (deflecting a ball coming from their
opponent), when at the moment of contact the back row player is
near the net and has part of his/her body above the top of the
net (an illegal block).
11.
Back row player attacking a ball inside the front zone (the
area inside the 10 foot line), when at the moment of contact the
ball is completely above the net (an illegal attack).
